3° Oman Desert Marathon: Stage six, the last twenty kilometers

3° Oman Desert Marathon: Stage six, the last twenty kilometers

Stage Six: the last 20 kilometers towards the Arabian Sea.

Km 20, total distance km 165,195

All runners woke up a little bit later and had some more sleep after the night stage. The briefing took place at 8.50 and the race started at 9. This stage had just one refreshment point at km 10,5 and the course was easy an smooth as the Marathon Stage for the first 12 kilometers. A desert road crossing small dunes, bushes and some vegetation characterized most of the first part of the race. After the refreshment point the scenery starts to change gradually and the competitors had to climb two big dunes of soft sand. The sand here, approaching to the sea, is getting whiter than in the rest of the course. If gold and red are the two dominating colors for most of the race, in the last stage the sand gets whiter and lighter. This 10 km section represents the last big effort  before the finish line and the end of the self sufficiency period: a good meal and cold drinks will wait all the runners at the end of the race.

During all the race the organization take random bag checks in order to assure the maximum respect of the rules by everybody. Today 3 competitors got 2 hours of penalty for trying to hide part of their equipment in the sleeping bags provided and transported by the organization. The importance of a fair treatment for all runners and the maximum respect of rules is one of the priorities of Oman Desert Marathon organizers: the competition is hard, the conditions are tough and everybody has to be treated in the same way. No exceptions.

Great surprise at the finish line: Evgini Glyva lost speed in the second part and was passed by the Omani Sami Alsaidi that arrived just after the Jordan Salamah Aaqra. King of the stage and of the race Rashid Al Murabiti  that today won running 20 km of dunes in only 1 hour and 56 minutes, six minutes less than the Ukrainian Evgini Glyva.

After a good meal and a swim in the Arabian Sea runners will spend last night at the camp, before heading to Wadi Bani Khalid and enjoy the hot springs and some real in the thermal water.
